TADAIMA!: I'm back ! ( or Some come, some go...)

Haaaa! School life....

One day all is under control, the other you hope to get through that ridiculously empty, self-absorbed, , "post-modern" bs-full French deconstructivist jargon - all 250 pages of that disgusting, vile stuff - and, at the same time, not rip all your hair out at the gall of the Republicans to try that "we are the common people" barf inducing joke again and again.... And see them succeed, again and again!!

Yep, so I'm studying Japanese/French/comparative literature and translation. Last leg before starting my Master's, if all goes well, so I'm psyched!

But Obama is still in the back of my mind and I was soooo proud of him, even though 2 HUGE party-pooper problems still made me wish for perfection to exist...

Yeah, one is easy to guess because it's bloody, ugly and shameless despite all proof: it's Gaza.

The other might be more difficult to understand for those who are still on post-election cloud 9: the Democrats systematic capitulation of the agenda setting's rhythm to the Republicans.

Still, to this day, we have to "negotiate", we have to give them the damn inch that they will transform exponentially and voraciously into light-years, we have to act kindly while they stump their feet.

Every mother of a 2 or 3 years old knows what to do in a case like this but not the bleeding heart Dems.

When a child is having a tantrum, you watch him kindly, smile and move away firmly and resolutely from the scene. You wait 'till they get their senses back, then you repeat your instructions until they sink in.

You do not give in. You do not negotiate (too much. But that depends on the degree of maturity of your toddler. Since this is the Repugs we're talking about, the level is -1 to nil. So just skip that part), you do not give candy for bad behaviour and to make peace at all cost or to look good for company because then your toddler will take you for a deranged idiot, and rightly so.

You stand firm.

When will that happen, with the Dems?

Good that some nutcases have left the building, but this sinking ship is still full of rats.
Obama, our new captain and his crew must do all in their power to keep us safe, not throw us overboard or feed us to the disloyal, deceiving thieves that put us all in this mess in the first place...

Old Facts to be Aware of... U.S. Foreign Aid

Things to remember in 2009: How Georges Bush finalized the transformation of the concept of foreign aid from helping countries in difficulty to just another arm of the military "operational plans".

When you see children dying in Gaza, remember that we bought some of the weapons killing them. Ignorance is not a defense anymore, never was. "Aid" is never neutral or perfectly selfless.

From Parade Magazine, of all places:

Who Gets U.S. Foreign Aid

The U.S. will give an estimated $26 billion in foreign aid in 2008—70% more than when President George W. Bush took office (the figure doesn’t include funds related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan). More than 150 countries get financial assistance from the U.S. Here are the six that received the most this year.

COUNTRY AID PURPOSE
1. Israel $2.4 billion Virtually all of this money is used to buy weapons (up to 75% made in the U.S.). Beginning in 2009, the U.S. plans to give $30 billion over 10 years.
2. Egypt $1.7 billion $1.3 billion to buy weapons; $103 million for education; $74 million for health care; $45 million to promote civic participation and human rights.
3. Pakistan $798 million $330 million for security efforts, including military-equipment upgrades and border security; $20 million for infrastructure.
4. Jordan $688 million $326 million to fight terrorism and promote regional stability through equipment upgrades and training; $163 million cash payment to the Jordanian government.
5. Kenya $586 million $501 million to fight HIV/AIDS through drug treatment and abstinence education and to combat malaria; $15 million for agricultural development; $5.4 million for programs that promote government accountability.
6. South Africa $574 million $557 million to fight TB and HIV/AIDS; $3 million for education.
7. Mexico $551 million Click here for details.
8. Colombia $541 million Click here for details.
9. Nigeria $491 million Click here for details.
10. Sudan $479 million Click here for details.

Nigeria?

US Offers Nigeria Military Aid to Protect Offshore Oil

by Hector Igbikiowubo

THE United States, keen to develop new sources of oil supply outside the Middle East, has offered to help Nigeria protect the flow of oil in the Gulf of Guinea and combat terrorist attacks on the oil industry, officials said. The Gulf of Guinea, stretching from Liberia in the west to Angola in the south, currently provides about 15 per cent of US oil supplies. That share is expected to grow to 25 per cent by 2015, according to a recent report commissioned for the U.S. Congress.

Bob Herbert is NOT laughing...

While Bush is chuckling all the way to his white-only neighborhood's mansion, New York Times' Bob Herbert is shaking with indignation.

We shake and glare at the "Cretin on the Hill" with him. But are we moved enough in anger to seek some sort of justice? Can we channel the righteous meanness of the Queen of Heart toward absurdity and scream "Off with his head!" long enough to see it roll?

Do Republicans have the exclusivity in rabid, relentless hounding?
Why couldn't we muster enough support for the impeachment of a genuine crook and easily spend millions of hours and dollars trying to find which consenting adult slept with his secretary?

Remember in 2006? From Professor Smartass' blog:

KEY EXCERPTS:

Zogby Poll: Americans Support Impeaching Bush for Wiretapping
Submitted by Bob Fertik on January 13, 2006
For Release: January 16, 2006

By a margin of 52% to 43%, Americans want Congress to consider impeaching President Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge's approval, according to a new poll commissioned by AfterDowningStreet.org, a grassroots coalition that supports a Congressional investigation of President Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003.

Recently White House spokesman Scott McClellan cited a Rasmussen poll that found 64% believe the NSA "should be allowed to intercept telephone conversations between terrorism suspects." Of course, that is exactly what Congress authorized when it created the FISA courts to issue special expedited secret warrants for terrorism suspects. But Bush defied the FISA law and authorized warrantless wiretaps of Americans, which has outraged Americans to the point that a majority believe Congress should consider Bush's impeachment.

"Bush admits he ordered illegal warantless wiretapping, but says it began in response to 9/11 and was limited to a small number of calls to or from Al Qaeda," Fertik said. "But recent reports suggest wiretapping affected a much larger number of Americans, and a report in Friday's Truthout says the wiretapping began before 9/11."

Whatever happened to all this support?
Why couldn't the Dems channel all this anger to fight the Repugs?
Are they really just there for show??

Add Up the Damage

Published: December 29, 2008

Does anyone know where George W. Bush is?

Bob Herbert

You don’t hear much from him anymore. The last image most of us remember is of the president ducking a pair of size 10s that were hurled at him in Baghdad.

We’re still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel is thrashing the Palestinians in Gaza. And the U.S. economy is about as vibrant as the 0-16 Detroit Lions.

But hardly a peep have we heard from George, the 43rd.

When Mr. Bush officially takes his leave in three weeks (in reality, he checked out long ago), most Americans will be content to sigh good riddance. I disagree. I don’t think he should be allowed to slip quietly out of town. There should be a great hue and cry — a loud, collective angry howl, demonstrations with signs and bullhorns and fiery speeches — over the damage he’s done to this country.

Bush :"I Didn't Compromise my Soul to be a Popular Guy...". WTF?!!

From Digg / Breitbart.

Bush says he didn't compromise soul to be popular

WASHINGTON (AP) - President George W. Bush knows he's unpopular. But here's what matters, he says: "I didn't compromise my soul to be a popular guy." In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News Channel, Bush also praised the national security team assembled by President-elect Barack Obama, offered hope to U.S. automakers seeking government assistance and said the people of Illinois will have to sort out allegations that Gov. Rod Blagojevich sought kickbacks in choosing a successor for Obama's Senate seat.

Bush said presidents fail when they make decisions based on opinion polls.

"Look, everybody likes to be popular," said Bush.

"What do you expect? We've got a major economic problem and I'm the president during the major economic problem. I mean, do people approve of the economy? No. I don't approve of the economy. ... I've been a wartime president. I've dealt with two economic recessions now. I've had, hell, a lot of serious challenges. What matters to me is I didn't compromise my soul to be a popular guy."

An Associated Press-GFK poll last week showed just 28 percent of the public approving of the job Bush is doing, about where he has been all fall. Among Republicans, 54 percent approve, a low figure from members of a president's own political party.

28% STILL like this guy?

He "DEALT" with the recession?

He is a "War President"? Whose freaking bad idea was that?

And what "soul" ? He's probably going to sell the flag he has under his arm to the highest bidder, with everything else that is not bolted down in the White House right now.

And, for God's sake, how many times did he give us the finger already?!!

More Proofs That Republicans Couldn't Care Less About American Families...

I don't know who the "reliable source is" but I don't think that what he said happened is too far from the truth. From Talking Point Memo:

What Happened

12.12.08 -- 9:48AM
By Josh Marshall

A quick update from a knowledgeable source who works in that big building with the dome ...

I don't think it'll be hard to explain why Senate Republicans had the final say: that's what the Constitution and Senate rules require. How else would we have passed anything?

I do think it'll be hard for Senate Republicans to explain themselves.

They were invited, repeatedly, to participate in more than a week of negotiations with a Republican White House. They declined.

They were asked to provide an alternative bill. They refused.

Finally, one of their members - Senator Corker of Tennessee - participated in a day-long negotiation with Senate Democrats, the UAW, and bondholders. Everyone made major concessions. Democrats gave up efficiency and emissions standards. UAW accepted major benefit cuts and agreed to reduce workers' wages. Bondholders signed off on a serious haircut. But when Senator Corker took the deal back to the Republican Conference, they argued for two hours and ultimately rejected it.

Why? Because they wanted the federal government to forcibly reduce the wages of American workers within the next 12 months.

Heard this morning that President Bush may still use TARP money to rescue the automakers. He reportedly doesn't want to end up as the next Hoover.

The emphasis are all mine.

Well. Believe it or not, in this particular instance, I hate to be right.

I hope some real journalists will ask some real hard questions to Republicans pretty soon and stop acting like corporate hacks.

If you want a comparative study of Bush and Hoover's presidencies, you'll find a good one on the Center For American Progress web site. It's interesting but you'll see that sadly the differences are merely cosmetic and unfavorable to Bush. I know: no surprises there...

Leaving the Cleaning up to the Little People...

Bush is moving up in the world - away from the little people, the starving middle class and other servants.

As Dave Johnson so accurately put it here on his Seeing the Forest blog, Bush is getting rid of his "Malboro Man" Disney prop of a ranch to go where the likes of Obama won't be able to follow - a good, clean, white only upscale Dallas neighborhood:

"Until 2000, the neighborhood association's covenant said only white people were allowed to live there, though an exception was made for servants. The document, enacted in 1956, reads:

"Said property shall be used and occupied by white persons only except these covenants shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of different race or nationality in the employ of a tenant."

But since the neighbors are ok with colored help, Condoleeza will still be able to drop by from time to time. Took them a while to learn to be discreetly racist, though.

Paul Krugman: In a Nutshell...

Krugman:the Movie
"The casting choice is obvious: George Clooney. Clooney with a beard could almost be Krugman's twin. Both Krugman and Clooney are unabashed liberals, so it should be a good fit. Krugman: brainy and bearded. Clooney: the same. What more do you want?"
Seattlepi.com

While the Seattle Pi web site is going gaga in a very funny way, we just want to congratulate Krugman on his Nobel today. When I read the Salon interview that you can find here, I welcome his calm, sane voice free of the false anxious marketing matted "optimism" that is based on denial and neuroticism:

"So the answer is to relearn our grandfathers' lessons: Highly leveraged financial institutions have to be regulated and insured."

Well, duh!!

It worked well before "Saving and Loans Scandal" pope Max Headroom II Ronald Reagan decided that the poor had enough, even maybe a bit too much, so why don't we make it easier for some to break the bank - literally - while we make it harder for the other to make a buck so only 1% of the whole country population can finally live happily ever after.

"Ideology played a big role -- but we should also bear in mind that the shadow banking system was making a few people incredibly rich. And that much wealth distorts policy, not just through campaign contributions and the revolving door, but because people who make that much money come across as masters of the universe who know what they're doing."

Nice to see another Tom Wolfe fan.

Say what you want but I do believe that the American Brain has been manipulated to crowned any suit and tie in a Volvo or black SUV as a superior moron. A moron maybe - we still can laugh at him - but a superior one that somehow we can let make life altering, country reframing decisions based on nothing than the kind of car he drives or if he was on TV last night or if he would accept us for a casual beer. Hannity, Limbaugh, Malkin made it easier (for some reason I personally cannot understand) to accept the policies of Wall Street bankers and Enron-like Ziegfield follies addicts UberCEOs that made it easier to take Edward Lazear, Michael "potato chips" Boskin and Greg "flipping burger is a manufacture job" Mankiw seriously.

Which made some of us trust Bush.

"If they are rich they cannot be wrong", some of you might have thought. Then you found out that they are rich because they have been robbing you blind. If you are older and you lost your retirement nest egg because of these irresponsible fools policies, I feel for you. A hard wind's gonna blow and you were the first to feel its cruel, cruel chill...

To Cindy, my neocon nut BFF, with all my bipartisanship love

My second week blogging and here come the neobots already! Propaganda must be shared at all cost, I guess…

"Gee wizzz buddy calm down.

Just because the market falls 20% after Obama is elected and non of the bail money has been released doesn't mean Obama is the cause.

(ok I am laughing over that)

Of course he is responsible, good grief the sell off is to avoid his increases in cap gains tax you idiot.

from Cindy "

But to answer my charming guest's puzzlement at the recession, let's use simple drawings: see the chart above, Cindy dear? That's the Dow's average index for June 2008 to November 2008.

Do you see what we could call a trend , maybe? Kind of like money getting out of one pocket and into oblivion type of thingy? And that - yes, yes, - even before Obama even won the election? But your guy was there remember? On permanent vacation…

But do not take my word for it, Cindy dear. Here's a professional putting it in professional terms:

"UP AND DOWN WALL STREET DAILY

Uncle Sam's Credit Line Running Out?

By RANDALL W. FORSYTH

NOVEMBER 11, 2008

The yield curve and credit default swaps tell the same story: the U.S. can't borrow trillions without paying a price.

WHAT ONCE WAS UNTHINKABLE has come to pass this year: massive bailouts by the Treasury and the Federal Reserve, with the extension of billions of the taxpayers' and the central bank's credit in so many new and untested schemes that you can't tell your acronyms or abbreviations without a scorecard.

Even more unbelievable is that some of the recipients of staggering sums are coming back for a second round. Or that the queue of petitioners grows by the day.

But what happens if the requests begin to strain the credit line of the world's most creditworthy borrower, the U.S. government itself? Unthinkable?

American International Group which originally had to borrow what was a stunning $85 billion from the Fed to keep it from cratering in September, upped the total Sunday to $150 billion.

Monday, Fannie Mae reported a $29 billion third-quarter loss, far in excess of forecasts, raising the specter that the mortgage giant may need more money after the Treasury pledged to inject $100 billion in preferred stock financing in September.

Meanwhile, American Express received Fed approval to convert to a bank holding company, joining the likes of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, that have a direct pipeline to borrow from the Fed or the Treasury's TARP, the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Fund.

And, of course, Detroit is looking for a credit line from Washington. General Motors (GM) Friday warned it could run out of cash next year without a government loan. GM plunged another 23% Monday, to 3.36, as several analysts helpfully recommended selling shares of the beleaguered automaker that already had lost more than 85% of their value.

Visiting the White House Monday, President-elect Obama pressed President Bush to support emergency aid for GM and other automakers. The prospect for federal aid for GM ironically weighed on its shares as one bearish analyst said the price of the bailout could be a wipeout of common holders.

Be that as it may, it's all adding up. If the late Sen. Everett Dirkson were around today, he might comment that a trillion here, a trillion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money.

Trillions are no hyperbole. The Treasury is set to borrow $550 billion in the current quarter alone and $368 billion in the first quarter of 2009. "Near-term pressures on Treasury finances are much more intense than we had thought," Goldman Sachs economists commented when the government announced its borrowing projections last week.

It may finally be catching up with Uncle Sam. That's what the yield curve may be whispering. But some economists are too deaf, or dumb, to get it...

Cutting through the technical jargon, the yield curve and the credit-default swaps market both indicate the markets are exacting a greater cost to lend to Uncle Sam. And it's not because of anticipated recovery, which would reduce, not increase, the cost of insuring Treasury debt against default.

All of which suggests America's credit line has its limits.

Oh, and he added:

"

The Recession Started in June at the Latest and is Deepening: Non-farm Payrolls

The most important chart is the 12 month moving average of the changes in US non-farm payrolls directly below.

It should have been apparent to any economist, as it was to us, that the US was falling into recession at the end of 2007. The actual start of the recession is a formality, but no dating for the start past June 2008 seems justifiable, especially when all the other coincident non-jobs indicators are consulted."

Pasted from <http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html>

In other words, the war and all those tax cut for your boss and the bosses' boss took a toll, Cindy. The government is quasi-bankrupt. I know, I know… Your media Republican gurus told you that we could run a deficit forever and call it small government, but, well, how could I put this: they lied to you.

Bush, the guy you voted for, took a budget surplus and run it to the ground. Then, since September at least, he added a last parting gift to his "homey" in the shape of a big fat Christmas bonus checks. And now the Chinese would like their money back, thank you very much. You know, our lenders…

Investors had lost faith in the American stock exchange way before Obama. But Bush unwillingness to address the problem by any other means than blank checks to defaulting companies - all while consumer consumption was down or stagnant and unemployment rampant - was the nail in the proverbial coffin. Of course, we'll share that coffin in a spirit of bipartisanship, Cindy. Don't worry...
